What size food processor do I need?
Match the work bowl to how you cook, not to the biggest number on the shelf. A mini processor of roughly 3 to 4 cups handles herbs, dressings, a single onion and small batches; a full-size bowl of 9 to 14 cups is what you want for dough, big batches of slaw, or shredding a block of cheese in one pass. The catch nobody prints on the box is the liquid capacity, which is always lower than the dry capacity, because a full bowl of liquid leaks past the blade shaft.

Does a higher-wattage food processor mean a better one?
Not reliably, and the number is less comparable than it looks. Some manufacturers publish continuous watts, some publish peak watts measured at the instant of maximum draw, and some publish only a nameplate figure. Those are different measurements, and putting them in one column implies a comparison that is not really there.
What actually decides whether a processor copes with a stiff dough or a hard block of Parmesan is the motor’s sustained torque and the quality of the drive coupling, not the headline wattage. Food processor or blender - which one do I actually need?
They are not substitutes. A blender moves food through liquid and makes smooth things from wet mixtures; a food processor cuts food in air and makes chopped, sliced, shredded or doughy things from dry ones. If you make smoothies and soups, you want a blender; if you chop, slice, shred and make dough, you want a processor.

What is the difference between a food processor and a chopper?
Size, versatility and price. A chopper is a small, one-job tool: a compact bowl, a single blade, and a lid you press or pull to pulse. It is brilliant at onions, garlic, nuts and salsa, and it is cheap. A food processor adds a feed tube, slicing and shredding discs, a dough blade and a much larger bowl, so it does far more — at several times the cost and the storage footprint.
If chopping is genuinely all you do, a chopper is the smarter buy and takes a drawer instead of a shelf. Here is how to decide between them.
Do I really need a food processor at all?
Honestly, plenty of kitchens do not. If your prep is a couple of onions and the occasional bit of garlic, a good knife and a small chopper cover it, and a full processor becomes the machine that lives in a cupboard because it is a nuisance to wash for one job.
A processor earns its place when you regularly do the things a knife makes slow: shredding blocks of cheese, slicing a mandoline’s worth of vegetables safely, making dough, or batch-prepping. If that is you, it is a genuine time-saver. The guide runs through who should skip one.
Can a food processor make dough?
Yes, and it is one of the jobs a full-size processor does better than most stand mixers for short, stiff doughs — pastry, pie crust and pizza dough come together in seconds because the blade cuts the fat into the flour before it can warm up. Many machines include a dull plastic dough blade specifically for it.
The limits are real: check your bowl’s maximum flour capacity, because overloading a processor with dough is the fastest way to strain the motor, and very wet or long-kneaded bread doughs are still better in a mixer. The how-to guide covers the dough setting and its limits.
Can a food processor shred cheese and slice vegetables?
That is where a full-size processor earns its keep. Fitted with the shredding disc it turns a block of cheese into a bowl of shreds in seconds, and with the slicing disc it produces even slices of potato, cucumber or onion far faster and more safely than a knife. Chill soft cheese first so it shreds cleanly rather than smearing.

Is a mandoline safe, and how do I use one without cutting myself?
A mandoline is the sharpest thing in most kitchens and the tool that sends people to the emergency room, but it is safe if you never let bare fingers near the blade. Always use the hand guard or a cut-resistant glove, keep your fingertips well back on the food, and stop slicing while there is still a usable stub rather than chasing the last few millimeters.
Set the thickness before you start, place the mandoline on a stable, non-slip surface, and fold the legs out fully so it cannot rock. The safety guide walks through each step, and cites the manufacturer manuals it draws from.
Electric chopper or manual chopper - which is better?
It depends on volume and how much you like washing motors. A manual chopper — the pull-cord or press-down kind — is cheap, needs no power, rinses clean in seconds and is quick for a single onion or a handful of nuts. An electric chopper handles bigger and harder loads with no effort, but it costs more, takes an outlet, and has more parts to clean.
For occasional small jobs, manual usually wins on convenience; for frequent or tough chopping, electric saves your wrist. Our chopper picks cover both kinds.
Which manual prep tools are actually worth owning?
The ones that do a specific job better than the alternative and then disappear into a drawer: a garlic press if you cook with a lot of garlic, a salad spinner if you eat a lot of greens, a box grater or rotary grater for cheese, a ricer for genuinely smooth mashed potato, and a citrus juicer if you juice by hand often. A food mill and a spiralizer are more specialized, worth it only if you make the things they make.
None of them uses electricity, none of them goes obsolete, and most cost less than a takeout meal. Our prep-tool picks group them by the job they do.
Are expensive prep tools worth it?
Sometimes, and the answer is different for powered and manual tools. For a food processor, paying more usually buys a stronger motor, a better drive coupling and a longer warranty, which matter if you push it hard and keep it for years. For a garlic press or a peeler, past a low threshold you are mostly paying for finish, not function.

How do I clean a food processor and these prep tools?
Rinse the bowl, blade and discs right after use, before anything dries on — dried dough and cheese are the hardest to shift. Most bowls and discs are top-rack dishwasher safe, but the motor base never goes near water; wipe it with a damp cloth. Handle the blades and discs by their plastic hubs, not the cutting edges.
For a mandoline, use the cleaning brush that comes with it or a folded cloth kept clear of the blade; never wipe an exposed blade with a bare finger. The how-to guide includes the cleaning routine that keeps the blades sharp.
How much does a food processor cost to run per year?
Almost nothing — for a food processor it lands around a dollar or two a year, and for a manual tool it is nothing at all. A 1,000 watt processor run 3 minutes a day, 365 days a year uses about 18.3 kWh, which at 17.45¢ per kWh comes to roughly $3.18 a year, and most processors run for seconds at a time rather than the generous three minutes a day assumed here.
The useful conclusion is that electricity cost should not influence which prep tool you buy. A garlic press, box grater or salad spinner draws no power at all, so we spend our attention on the things that do matter. The buying guides walk through capacity, blades and build instead.
Why does warranty length matter so much on this site?
Because it is the closest thing to an honest, legally binding durability statement that a manufacturer publishes. A warranty term is a company committing, in a document, to repair or replace its own motor for a stated number of years. When one brand writes several years into that document and another writes twelve months, they are telling you what they each expect their product to survive.
It is also almost never tabulated anywhere, which makes it cheap authority for anyone willing to read the documents. Ours is laid out with each term linked to the manufacturer’s own warranty page.
Do you actually test these tools?
No, and we say so on every page that ranks one.We do not own these machines, we have no test kitchen, and we do not accept free units. You will not find the phrase “in our testing” anywhere on this site because it would not be true.
What we do instead: compile the published specification from the manufacturer’s own documents, verify each warranty term against the manufacturer’s warranty page, add a plain safety read for cutting tools, track the price live, and cite all of it so you can check the work. Then why should I trust a site that hasn't tested anything?
Because everything here is checkable. Every specification links to the manufacturer document it came from, every warranty term links to the warranty page it was read from, and every safety claim about a cutting tool cites the manual it came from. You can reproduce a ranking, or disagree with it on the evidence.
That is a different kind of authority from a test lab, and a weaker one in some respects. It is also largely uncontested in this category: the sites that do own the machines mostly do not publish warranty comparisons, and some of the highest-ranking ones put their prices behind a paywall.
How do you make money?

Why do some products show a price and others say 'check price'?
Because we would rather show nothing than something stale. Prices come from Amazon’s API with the date of the last check printed beside them. If that data is older than 48hours, the number is removed automatically and the button falls back to “check price”.
It never falls back to the last number we knew. A price that quietly stopped being true is a small lie told to someone about to spend money.
